  1. Module Description

This module explores the importance of slavery, its consequences in Latin American societies and its representation as a topic, motif or perspective in contemporary Latin American music, visual arts, films and literature. Since the anti-slavery texts written by the criollos in the late 19th century, the representation of the slave or indentured servant has taken new shapes in popular culture. The slave, indio and negro, is part of a reservoir of images engaging with the collective and national imaginations and readdressed in Latin American cultures according to contemporary, social and political agendas. We will discuss how Indian and African slavery affect the national imaginations in 20th century Cuba, Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia, Argentina and Peru.
